1984年，英國歌手菲爾柯林斯(Phil Collins)看到新聞中非洲依索匹亞等地區(qū)的人民，長期處于饑荒與營養(yǎng)不良而死亡，遂在圣誕節(jié)之前提出構(gòu)想，由鮑伯蓋朵夫(Bob Geldof)擔(dān)任召集人，由數(shù)十位當(dāng)紅藝人以「Band Aid」為名共同灌錄單曲義賣，將義賣所得援助非洲饑民，單曲「他們知道現(xiàn)在是圣誕節(jié)嗎?」(Do they know it's Christmas ?)于焉誕生。這張單曲推出后，立即在全世界引起回響，光是英美兩地就賣出約三百廿萬張。
英國歌壇的此項(xiàng)義舉，美國歌唱界自然不落人后，由黑人歌手哈利貝拉方提(Harry Belafonte)提出建議，之后獲得眾大牌歌手的鼎力支持，由昆西瓊斯(Quincy Jones)擔(dān)任制作人，在1985年2月28日，45位當(dāng)紅歌星云集洛杉磯的錄音室，灌錄了「四海一家」(We are the world)這首義賣單曲。
1985年，Michael Jackson做了一件國際性慈善壯舉。當(dāng)時(shí)非洲正鬧饑荒，數(shù)以萬計(jì)的兒童正受到饑荒之威脅，而非洲的情況是，人們開始放棄為生存而努力，因?yàn)橐磺械囊磺兴坪醵家咽峭絼凇Ｔ谶@樣的背景下，Michael Jackson作為發(fā)起人呼吁美國歌手一起灌錄歌曲[We Are The World]。
Harry Belafonte 和 Kenny Rogers組織執(zhí)行，Michael Jackson和Lionel Richie寫了歌曲，Quincy Jones擔(dān)任制作，45名當(dāng)紅歌手放下自我，誠意合作，這該算是那年音樂界的一個(gè)奇跡了。歌曲收錄在USA for Africa的專輯里。
1985年7月13日，名為“拯救生命”的大型搖滾樂演唱會(huì)在英國倫敦和美國費(fèi)城同時(shí)舉行。13日中午，演唱會(huì)先在倫敦威姆布萊體育場(chǎng)開幕.72000人出席了開幕式。兩小時(shí)后，美國費(fèi)城約翰肯尼迪體育場(chǎng)的音樂會(huì)也宣布開始，共有9萬人觀看了演出。演出一直持續(xù)了16個(gè)小時(shí)，并通過全球通信衛(wèi)星網(wǎng)絡(luò)向140多個(gè)國家播出了實(shí)況，估計(jì)總共吸引了近15億的電視觀眾。全世界100多位著名搖滾樂歌星參加了這次義演，他們之中有鮑博迪倫、保爾麥卡特尼、布魯斯斯普林斯廷、蒂娜特納、艾爾頓約翰、 邁克爾杰克遜……
