　　Americans love pets. And it s not just puppy love，either. Many pet owners treat their furry friends as part of the family. Sometimes they spice up their pets lives with entertaining videos and amusing toys. If they have an eye for fashion，pet owners can dress their pets in stylish clothes. For special occasions，they can use canine perfume to make their dogs smell well. You might say americans treat their pets like they treat their children-sometimes even better.

　　There are more households with pets than those with children in america. At least 43 percent of u.s. homes have pets of some sort. Exotic creatures，such as monkeys，snakes and even wolves，find a home with some americans. More common pets include tropical fish，mice and birds. But the all-time favorites are cats and dogs，even at the white house. The bushes dog，spot，has replaced the clintons cat，socks，as reigning first pet. Americans sometimes have strong feelings about whether dogs or cats make better pets. "Dog people" and "cat people" often enjoy friendly rivalries.

　　Beneath the furry luxuries，there lies a basic american belief：pets have a right to be treated well. At least 75 animal welfare organizations exist in america. These provide care and adoption services for homeless and abused animals. Veterinarians can give animals an incredible level of medical care for an incredible price. To pay for the high-tech health care，people can buy health insurance for their pets. And when it s time to say good-bye，owners can bury their pets in a respectable pet cemetery.

　　Pets are as basic to american culture as hot dogs or apple pie. To americans，pets are not just property，but a part of the family. After all，pets are people，too.

　　美國人很愛寵物，而且還不是一時的激情。很多寵物主把這些毛絨絨的朋友當作家庭一員，有時候還為它們準備有趣的錄像帶和玩具，讓它們過得有滋有味。如果主人時髦的話，他們還會給自己的寵物穿上時髦的衣服。在一些特殊場合，他們甚至為狗噴上專用香水，這樣它們聞起來就香噴噴的啦。可以這樣說，美國人待他們的寵物就像待自己的孩子——有時有過之而無不及。

　　有寵物的家庭比有孩子的家庭還多。至少43%的美國家庭養(yǎng)有不同種類的寵物，有些還飼養(yǎng)外來品種，例如猴子、蛇甚至狼;更常見的寵物有熱帶魚、老鼠和鳥。不過，貓和狗一直是最有人氣的，即使在白宮也不例外。布什的狗——斯波特已經(jīng)取代了克林頓的貓——襪子，成為高高在上的"第一寵物"。最好的的寵物到底是貓還是狗?美國人有時候被這個問題弄得牽腸掛肚的。 "愛狗的人"和"愛貓的人"呢，也經(jīng)常喜歡彼此調(diào)侃一番。

　　在寵物奢華享受的背后，其實存在著美國人的一種基本信念：寵物有權受到善待。美國至少有75個動物福利組織，他們?yōu)榱麟x失所以及受到虐待的動物提供照顧與領養(yǎng)服務。獸醫(yī)給動物提供的醫(yī)療護理好得令人難以置信——價格自然極其昂貴。若是為了負擔高科技的衛(wèi)生保健，主人可買到寵物健康保險。寵物死時，主人還可以買到一塊體面的墓地安葬它們。

　　寵物是美國文化中很基本的一部分，就如熱狗和蘋果派一樣。對美國人而言，寵物不僅僅是私人財產(chǎn)，而且還是家庭的一部分。畢竟，寵物也是"人"啊!
